The 2015 Mount Helena Whim Festival

The Whim Festival has come and gone. It was a whole lot of fun and, as we planned, people did connect.

The music was magnificent from the Eastern Hills Senior High School Concert bands to the little dancers from the primary school. Some of the local musicians that Phil enticed to perform were really world class and his group, Blues Confusion, was a grand finale.

The Scarecrows were a great hit as also were rides on ponies and the model traction engines lovingly made by people from the Northern Districts Model Engineering Society; but for the competitive, the laser skirmish from Backyard Battlefield was the most exciting. As ever, Bendigo’s Pavement Art attracted many budding artists. There were enough hands-on activities to fill a full day -from the Venture Scouts’ rope bridge to Mundaring in Transition’s mini workshop making re-usable lunch wraps and the Junior Football Club’s handball.

Talking to people from the organisations that serve our community gives us a better understanding of what is on offer.RISE, the Mundaring  and Hills Historical Society, Toastmasters and the Shire of Mundaring were there among others.

Local schools were well represented including EHSHS with a display of work – tables to lemon tarts; the Mundaring Christian College featuring plans of their new campus. Other groups like the Venture Scouts made their popular rope bridge and the Wood Turners demonstrated a lathe; the Men’s Shed had their delightful fish pond game for tiny tots while Wheels, the social group for seniors, had a challenging five senses quiz.

Whim Photography Exhibition and Competition. This year we accepted digital as well as printed entries. The digital shots were displayed on a screen at the festival.  The theme was “Dusk ’til Dawn in the Hills“.   The winner of the open category was Adrien Julitz , commended, Dom Lieb. Secondary and primary school winners; (TBA )Winner of the open section also received free framing from Guest Fine Art.

Whim Writing  was popular and a feature we will continue. The Colouring Competition had many entries from around the Shire again.
